Gilson Riecken Joins Terra Staff

Corte Madera, CA - Gilson S. Riecken, R.A., J.D., a registered architect and attorney, has joined the staff of Terra Insurance Company, a risk retention group, as Vice President, Claims. He is responsible for managing all claims filed against Terra policyholders. He will also assist them with contract review and loss prevention.

Mr. Riecken entered the Washington University School of Architecture (St. Louis, MO) in 1971, after earning a bachelor of arts in economics, cum laude, from Harvard College (Cambridge, MA). He transferred to the Harvard Graduate School of Design in 1974, which awarded him a master's of architecture degree in 1976.

Mr. Riecken joined a San Antonio (TX) architectural firm in 1976, staying there 11 years before being named executive director/planning director of the Fort Worth (TX) Cultural District Committee. He rejoined the private sector four years later, in 1992, as a planner for an independent planning/design firm in Fort Worth. He remained there until entering Boalt Hall Law School of the University of California, Berkeley in 1993. He has been an associate with San Francisco's Hanson, Bridgett, Marcus, Vlahos & Rudy since graduating from Boalt Hall in 1996.

"Gilson brings outstanding knowledge and experience to his position," Terra CEO David L. J. Coduto said. "He knows what it's like to be a design practitioner, because he was one, and he is intimately familiar with the issues faced by our owner/insureds, because he has been working with them, through Hanson, Bridgett, for more than five years. Gilson's arrival will permit Terra to significantly elevate the quality of service to its owner/insureds and make Terra a stronger insurer of design professionals."

All Terra insureds are owners, Mr. Coduto explained, because, by law, those insured by a risk retention group must own the company. Terra owner/insureds are not at all unhappy about that situation, he said. As of March 31, 2003, Terra achieved its 61st consecutive stock valuation record and a new all-time high asset value. Since 1988, only one insured has left the organization voluntarily, and it since has returned. Rated A ("Excellent") by A.M. Best, Terra comprises 90 owner/insureds whose gross fees range from less than $500,000 to more than $150 million per year.
